A window manager controls the size, placement and operation of windows on the root window. The window manager can be either a host-based client or a local client. For information about the advantages and disadvantages of local window managers, see Memory and Performance Considerations for Clients.
You can use any of the following local window managers:
$HOME
directory override the host-based files.
Local clients should be used with a Netstation in XDM mode (see Using dtlogin or vuelogin in XDM Mode).
VUE/RX is a local window manager that has been specifically designed for HP Netstations.
The default control panel contains:
VUE/RX Control Panel
The following sections contain more information:
You can also refer to the following man pages:
man vuerx man vuerxrc
If you want to use a local VUE/RX window manager, do the following:
.xsession
file. (Refer to Creating Users' Startup Scripts for
more information.)
/opt/hpxt/enware2/xthome
/sys.xsession
file to $HOME/.xsession
.
.xsession
file (or the sys.xsession
file).
Uncomment the line that starts vuerx
(and comment out the lines that start other window managers).
For example:
WM="$XTBINDIR/hpxt.vuerx"
$HOME/.dtprofile
) to include the line:
SESSIONTYPE=xdm
Xconfig
file:
/usr/vue/config
/Xconfig
Within this file, the XDM mode is set globally, for example:
Vuelogin*xdmMode: True
You can override the global setting for a specific Netstation with a line like this:
Vuelogin.
terminalname_0.xdmMode: False
Set XDM mode for your Netstation to True (or, if the global XDM mode is True make sure that there is no False setting for your Netstation).
If you want to customize the appearance of VUE/RX, do the following:
/opt/hpxt/enware2/xthome
/vuerx/sys.vuerxrc
to $HOME/.vuerxrc
.
The .vuerxrc
file defines the contents of the control panel and the
root menus.
.vuerxrc
file.
For example, you can:
BOX LiteToolsSubpanel ... CONTROL litetool1 ... CONTROL litetool1 { TYPE button IMAGE tools LABEL "Load Viewer" PUSH_ACTION f.exec "xload -name LoadViewer" CLIENT_NAME LoadViewer }
BOX LiteTerminalSubpanel ... CONTROL term1 ... CONTROL term1 { TYPE button LABEL "HP Netstation hpterm" IMAGE termina PUSH_ACTION f.exec "hpxt.hpterm -ls" }
In the sample file, both local and host-based terminal emulators are defined. The local clients have a larger icon and the words HP Netstation in front.
$HOME/.Xdefaults
as described in Customizing Colors, Fonts and Other Application Defaults.
/opt/hpxt
/enware2/xthome/lib/app-defaults/Vuerx
to $HOME/.Xdefaults
:
cat /opt/hpxt/enware2/xthome/lib/app-defaults/Vuerx >>.Xdefaults
The .Xdefaults
file defines colors, fonts, and other application defaults.
.Xdefaults
file.
For example, you can:
*colorPalette: Broica.vpsays that the palette named Broica will be used. For a grayscale monitor, use
Grayscale.vp
.
On HP-UX systems, you can use
/usr/vue/bin/vuestyle
to see the different palettes.
Vuerx*workspaceList: 1 2 3 4defines four workspaces, named 1, 2, 3, and 4.
In general, clients that are started by the .xsession
file appear in
workspace 1 and the clients you start manually appear in the workspace
in which you start them.
However, some clients are so useful that you may want them
to appear in more than one workspace.
To control the workspaces in which a client appears, click and hold on the square in the upper-left corner of the window (the portion of the window's title bar that contains a long rectangle). You will see the following entries:
Occupy Workspace...
provides a Workspace Presence menu.
To add the window to new workspaces:
[OK]
.
To remove the window from workspaces:
[OK]
.
Occupy All Workspaces
is a quick way to add the window to all of your
workspaces.
Unoccupy Workspace
removes the window from the current workspace.
CDE Lite (dtwmlite) is a local window manager that has been designed to give the look and feel of the full CDE Desktop with lower memory requirements.
The default control panel contains:
CDE Lite Control Panel
The following sections contain more information:
If you want to use a local CDE Lite window manager, do the following:
.xsession
file. (Refer to Creating Users' Startup Scripts for
more information.)
/opt/hpxt/enware2/xthome
/sys.xsession
file to $HOME/.xsession
.
.xsession
file (or the sys.xsession
file).
Uncomment the line that starts dtwmlite
(and comment out the lines that start other window managers).
For example:
WM="$XTBINDIR/hpxt.dtwmlite"
Xconfig
file.
The file has one of the following locations:
/usr/vue/config
/Xconfig
(for vuelogin)
/usr/dt/config
/Xconfig
(for dtlogin)
Within this file, the XDM mode is set globally, for example:
Vuelogin*xdmMode: True
Dtlogin*xdmMode: True
You can override the global setting for a specific Netstation with a line like this:
Vuelogin.
terminalname_0.xdmMode: False
Dtlogin.
terminalname_0.xdmMode: False
Set XDM mode for your Netstation to True (or, if the global XDM mode is True make sure that there is no False setting for your Netstation).
man hpxt.dtwmlite
man hpxt.dtfpfile
man hpxt.dtdtfile
The man pages describe in detail the many different customization options available, including:
$HOME/.dt
directory.
You can run the HP VUE window manager (vuewm) either locally or from the host. In general, they work the same, except:
Please note that you can run vuewm only with a peer.
If you want to run vuewm locally, do the following:
[OK]
.
To change back to running vuewm from the host,
repeat these instructions.
The prompt will be reversed:
"You are currently configured to execute VUEWM as a local client on your terminal.
Do you want to run VUEWM on your workstation instead?"
Click on [OK]
.
For more information about the HP VUE window manager, see the HP VUE documentation.
Local client versions of the Motif window manager (mwm) twm are provided with HP Netstation Software. (The twm client is not supported, and is provided as a convenience only.)
If you want to use a local mwm or twm client, do the following:
.xsession
file. (Refer to Creating Users' Startup Scripts for
more information.)
/opt/hpxt/enware2/xthome
/sys.xsession
file to $HOME/.xsession
.
.xsession
file (or the sys.xsession
file).
Uncomment the line that starts mwm or twm
(and comment out the lines that start other window managers).
For example:
WM="$XTBINDIR/hpxt.mwm"
Xconfig
file.
The file has one of the following locations:
/usr/vue/config
/Xconfig
(for vuelogin)
/usr/dt/config
/Xconfig
(for dtlogin)
Within this file, the XDM mode is set globally, for example:
Vuelogin*xdmMode: True
Dtlogin*xdmMode: True
You can override the global setting for a specific Netstation with a line like this:
Vuelogin.
terminalname_0.xdmMode: False
Dtlogin.
terminalname_0.xdmMode: False
Set XDM mode for your Netstation to True (or, if the global XDM mode is True make sure that there is no False setting for your Netstation).

man hpxt.mwm
or man hpxt.twm
