Using a Local Window Manager

A window manager controls the size, placement and operation of windows on the root window. The window manager can be either a host-based client or a local client. For information about the advantages and disadvantages of local window managers, see Memory and Performance Considerations for Clients.

You can use any of the following local window managers:

If you run a local window manager with a peer, any resource files found in your $HOME directory override the host-based files.

Local clients should be used with a Netstation in XDM mode (see Using dtlogin or vuelogin in XDM Mode).

Using VUE/RX Local Window Manager

VUE/RX is a local window manager that has been specifically designed for HP Netstations.

The default control panel contains:

VUE/RX Control Panel

The following sections contain more information:

You can also refer to the following man pages:

man vuerx
man vuerxrc

Selecting VUE/RX

If you want to use a local VUE/RX window manager, do the following:

  1. If necessary, create the .xsession file. (Refer to Creating Users' Startup Scripts for more information.)
Note: If you are working in an IBM AIX environment, you have to copy the /opt/hpxt/enware2/xthome
    /sys.xsession file to $HOME/.xsession.

  2. Edit the .xsession file (or the sys.xsession file). Uncomment the line that starts vuerx (and comment out the lines that start other window managers). For example:
             WM="$XTBINDIR/hpxt.vuerx"

  3. Enable XDM mode for dtlogin by editing the user's dtprofile ($HOME/.dtprofile) to include the line:
    SESSIONTYPE=xdm

  4. If you are using vuelogin (HP VUE) edit the Xconfig file:

Within this file, the XDM mode is set globally, for example:

You can override the global setting for a specific Netstation with a line like this:

Set XDM mode for your Netstation to True (or, if the global XDM mode is True make sure that there is no False setting for your Netstation).

  5. Log out and log in again.

Customizing VUE/RX

If you want to customize the appearance of VUE/RX, do the following:

  1. If you have not already done so, copy /opt/hpxt/enware2/xthome/vuerx/sys.vuerxrc to $HOME/.vuerxrc. The .vuerxrc file defines the contents of the control panel and the root menus.

  2. Make the appropriate changes to the .vuerxrc file. For example, you can:

  3. If you have not already done so, copy an appropriate file to $HOME/.Xdefaults as described in Customizing Colors, Fonts and Other Application Defaults.

  4. If you have not already done so, append /opt/hpxt
    /enware2/xthome/lib/app-defaults/Vuerx to $HOME/.Xdefaults:
    cat /opt/hpxt/enware2/xthome/lib/app-defaults/Vuerx >>.Xdefaults

The .Xdefaults file defines colors, fonts, and other application defaults.

  5. Make the appropriate changes to the .Xdefaults file. For example, you can:

  6. When you have finished making changes, log out and log in again.

Using the VUE/RX Workspaces

In general, clients that are started by the .xsession file appear in workspace 1 and the clients you start manually appear in the workspace in which you start them. However, some clients are so useful that you may want them to appear in more than one workspace.

To control the workspaces in which a client appears, click and hold on the square in the upper-left corner of the window (the portion of the window's title bar that contains a long rectangle). You will see the following entries:

Note: You cannot use these menu options to remove a window from every workspace.

Using CDE Lite Local Window Manager

CDE Lite (dtwmlite) is a local window manager that has been designed to give the look and feel of the full CDE Desktop with lower memory requirements.

Note: If you want the equivalent functionality of host-based CDE, you can order the HP Netstation Software CDE optional product. This product gives you a local CDE window manager (dtwm) and a local CDE terminal emulator (dtterm).

The default control panel contains:

CDE Lite Control Panel

The following sections contain more information:

Selecting CDE Lite

If you want to use a local CDE Lite window manager, do the following:

Uncomment the line that starts dtwmlite (and comment out the lines that start other window managers). For example:
     WM="$XTBINDIR/hpxt.dtwmlite"

  3. If you are using vuelogin (HP VUE) or dtlogin (CDE), edit the Xconfig file. The file has one of the following locations:

Within this file, the XDM mode is set globally, for example:

You can override the global setting for a specific Netstation with a line like this:

Set XDM mode for your Netstation to True (or, if the global XDM mode is True make sure that there is no False setting for your Netstation).

  4. Log out and log in again.

Customizing CDE Lite

For detailed information on customizing your CDE Lite control panel, refer to the following man pages:

The man pages describe in detail the many different customization options available, including:

Note: Any changes you make to CDE Lite are kept in your $HOME/.dt directory.

Using a Local HP VUE Window Manager

You can run the HP VUE window manager (vuewm) either locally or from the host. In general, they work the same, except:

If you want to run vuewm locally, do the following:

  1. Log into an HP VUE session (not an HP VUE Lite session).

  2. Pull up the Tools icon.

  3. Click on the "General" toolbox.

  4. Double-click on "Netstation".

  5. Double-click on the "HpnsSelectVUEwm" icon.

  6. When asked, "You are currently configured to execute VUEWM on your workstation. Do you want to run VUEWM as a local client on your terminal instead?" click on [OK].

To change back to running vuewm from the host, repeat these instructions. The prompt will be reversed: "You are currently configured to execute VUEWM as a local client on your terminal. Do you want to run VUEWM on your workstation instead?" Click on [OK].

  7. Log out and log in again. On the login screen, you can select either an HP VUE session or an HP VUE Lite session.

For more information about the HP VUE window manager, see the HP VUE documentation.

Using a Local mwm or twm Window Manager

Local client versions of the Motif window manager (mwm) twm are provided with HP Netstation Software. (The twm client is not supported, and is provided as a convenience only.)

If you want to use a local mwm or twm client, do the following:

Uncomment the line that starts mwm or twm (and comment out the lines that start other window managers). For example:
             WM="$XTBINDIR/hpxt.mwm"

For more information, see man hpxt.mwm or man hpxt.twm.
